A would-be cop killer recently tried to wrestle a gun away from a Wyoming State Trooper on the side of the highway. Now, the story has gone viral after the punk paid a heavy price for failing to see who was coming up behind him until it was too late.
Once again, a shocking story has emerged of a violent criminal doing something stupid. This time, a drug-running thug decided he was going to try to overpower a Wyoming State Trooper and succeeded in taking the fight to the ground. As the trooper and the suspect wrestled in the dirt, a trucker noticed what was happening and decided to make the punk pay for his criminal behavior.
According to local news source KSL, the shocking incident took place in the morning hours of Thursday, May 31, 2018. Police said that a good Samaritan named Darren Phillips noticed the suspect and the trooper wrestling on the ground when he decided to help.
“You see a lot of crazy things when you’re driving,” he said with a laugh. “Mainly a lot of crazy drivers cutting us off or on their phones.”
What is usually an uneventful stretch of road between Salt Lake City and Wyoming, quickly turned into a nightmare after Phillips spotted the trooper struggling with the suspect who was later identified as 36-year-old Dustin Roberts. Phillips will never forget what he saw as he pulled his 18-wheeler closer.
“I could see the two of them wrestling around and fighting, and there was nobody else around,” said Phillips.
Immediately, Phillips knew that he had to do something to help the State Trooper. Roberts was desperately trying to get the trooper’s gun away from him, and he was still struggling to do so when Phillips ran up to help. Phillips had parked his truck in the passing lane next to where the trooper’s car was parked.
“I put my brakes on, and I jump out and by this time, the trooper is on his back and the guy is on top of him,” Phillips said. “The trooper saw me running over, and as soon as I got up to him, he says, he’s going for my gun.”
Phillips later said that he could see both the trooper’s hand and Roberts’ hand on the gun. There was no doubt that this thug had some seriously bad intentions if he managed to get the trooper’s gun away from him. What Phillips did next is like a scene out of a movie.
“So I just came around behind him and just reached around and put my arm right there and I held it with my other hand and I stood up and I just went back,” he said. “And as I came back, he just came back with me and just fell right on top of me.”
When another trooper arrived, Phillips was still laying on his back with Roberts in a brutal rear choke hold. Roberts was then handcuffed and taken into custody, according to USA Today.
Following the incident, Phillips said, “I spent 12 years in the Marine Corps and 14 years with the Utah Army National Guard. I did two tours in Iraq, and I never had to put a choke hold on anyone. That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever done. After he was handcuffed and they were putting him in the patrol car, as he walks by, he’s like ‘nice choke hold,’” said Phillips as he laughed.
When troopers searched Roberts’ vehicle, they found 74 pounds of marijuana and some cocaine, according to Lt. Ben Schlosser with the Wyoming Highway Patrol. Now, Roberts is in jail, and he’s going to be there for quite some time. The trooper came out of the incident with some minor cuts but is expected to be fine thanks to Phillips.
“I was just happy to be in the right place at the right time,” said Phillips. “Anything I can do for those guys who put their life on the line every day for us, I’ll do any time.”
In my opinion, Phillips represents the very best of us. If he hadn’t decided to pull over and help the trooper, there may have been a funeral for him this week. The local community owes Phillips a tremendous amount of gratitude for saving one of their finest and helping to put one very bad man behind bars.
