House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy (SC-R) is never one to mince words with regards to his belief in right and wrong. A very principled man, Gowdy held nothing back as he gave disgraced former FBI Director James Comey a piece of his mind during a fiery opening statement.
Gowdy’s statement kicked off the Senate Judiciary Committee’s official inquiry into the Department of Justice’s damning report from Inspector General Michael Horowitz released last week. Gowdy scorched Comey in a blistering opening statement at a high-profile congressional hearing on Tuesday, declaring “we can’t survive with a justice system we don’t trust.”
Fox News reports –
“Gowdy kicked off the hearing featuring testimony from Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz on his review of the Hillary Clinton email case. The top DOJ watchdog is on Capitol Hill for the second day in a row to discuss the explosive report.
But Gowdy launched into Tuesday’s session — a joint hearing held by the House oversight and judiciary panels — with a fiery condemnation of the former FBI director and certain agents in the bureau he led.
Referring to IG findings that Comey defied his superiors in his handling of the Clinton email case, Gowdy accused the ex-director of essentially operating by his own rules.
“We see Jim Comey and Jim Comey alone deciding which DOJ policies to follow and which to ignore,” he said.
Gowdy accused Comey of watering down his initial statement on the investigation’s findings and making other decisions on his own. While Comey has suggested he acted unilaterally out of concern for the Justice Department’s handling of the case, Gowdy questioned why he didn’t seek a special counsel — as he indirectly did regarding concerns about the Trump administration.
“Instead, he appointed himself FBI director, attorney general, special counsel, lead investigator and the general arbiter of what is good and right in the world according to him,” Gowdy said.
Gowdy said that Horowitz’s report, which was released last Thursday, should “conjure anger, disappointment and sadness in anyone who reads it.”
He also said that, in the wake of the IG report, there were FBI agents and attorneys who decided to “prejudge” the outcome of the Clinton case.
“These exact same FBI agents and attorney prejudged the outcome of the Russia investigation before it even began,” he added.
He said “prejudging the outcome of an investigation before it ends, and prejudging the outcome of an investigation before it begins” is the “textbook definition of bias.”
Horowitz also testified on Monday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
In that hearing, he confirmed that his office was investigating Comey for potentially mishandling classified information, regarding the sharing of memos detailing conversations with President Trump.”
The IG report was full of revelations providing evidence in black and white of significant misconduct on the part of the FBI, as well as on the part of Comey while he served in a leadership capacity over the Bureau. It seems the blowback is just getting ramped as well under Gowdy’s leadership. An official investigation has been opened into Comey for his use of a private email server being used to conduct official FBI business – the very same charge he was investigating Hillary Clinton for.
Grassley: “Is the IG investigating Comey’s handling of his memos about Trump?”
Horowitz: “Yes, we’re investigating it and will produce a report on it.”

The DOJ IG’s office has also officially announced that the FBI itself is under investigation for the possibility that they manufactured the entire “Russian Collusion” prove for political reasons.
The Daily Caller reports –
“Former FBI director James Comey is under investigation for mishandling classified information, DOJ inspector general Michael Horowitz revealed Monday.
He is specifically under investigation for his handling of memos he wrote about interactions with President Trump while FBI director.
“Comey said he did not expect a report on his handling of classified information because, ‘That’s frivolous.’ I don’t happen to think that it is frivolous,” Sen. Chuck Grassley said during a Senate hearing Monday.
“Question number one, Mr. Horowitz, are you investigating the handling of his memo and does that include the classification issues, and should Mr. Comey expect a report when it’s complete?” Grassley asked.
“We received a referral on that from the FBI. We are handling that referral and we will issue a report when the matter is complete, consistent with the law and rules that are — a report that’s consistent and takes those into account,” Horowitz responded.
Gowdy took former Rep. Jason Chaffetz’s place as chair of the House Oversight Committee in 2017. He is a former federal prosecutor representing South Carolina’s 4th congressional district which includes much of the upstate region of the state, including the cities of Greenville and Spartanburg. From 2014 to 2016, Gowdy chaired the United States House Select Committee on Events Surrounding the 2012 Terrorist Attack in Benghazi which was partly responsible for the original discovery of the existence of Hillary Clinton’s private email server.
His investigative committee spent over two and a half years and $7.8 million investigating the events surrounding the 2012 Benghazi attack. Gowdy pressed for the prosecution of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Gowdy has chosen to leave politics and plans to head back to the private sector to pursue a legal career rather than a political one after the 2018 midterm election.
On January 31, 2018, Gowdy announced he would not seek re-election in 2018 and that he intends to pursue a legal career instead of politics.”
